What's Behind Obama's Oil Spill Speech

In light of President Obama's speech tonight on the BP oil spill, I thought this article published in Heritage Foundation's Morning Bell would give us all a look into what's really behind the speech. Look out America...here comes Cap & Tax...but under another name.

Listen for the words Renewable Energy Standards (RES).  They know that we are smart on Cap & Trade, so a name change is called for.  Unfortunately, a Pig by any other name is still a Pig:

The left knows that the American public has been educated about the economic harms of cap-and-trade, and they are hoping they can use the BP oil spill to pass renewable energy standards (RES) before the public wises up. Don’t be fooled: an RES is just another way for the enviro-left to inflict an economy-killing energy tax on the American public.

An RES would:
  • Raise electricity prices by 36 percent for households and 60 percent for industry;
  • Cut national income (GDP) by $5.2 trillion between 2012 and 2035;
  • Cut national income by $2,400 per year for a family of four;
  • Reduce employment by more than 1,000,000 jobs; and
  • Add more than $10,000 to a family of  four’s share of the national debt by 2035

What's especially interesting in this article is what it says about BP and their stance on carbon taxes:

The irony here is that BP has been a special interest pushing for carbon pricing on Capitol Hill for years now.
hmmm......

The Gulf Oil Spill has become the "crisis" the Obama Administration has been waiting for.  Over 50 days of oil spewing out into the emerald Gulf of Mexico, washing up on the American shoreline, covering the wildlife and killing many...wow, Obama couldn't have asked for more ammunition to take advantage of to sell his energy tax plan.

The Morning Bell article:

The Obama Energy Tax Game Plan

In February of this year, after Sen. Scott Brown’s (R-MA) victory put Obamacare on life support, health insurer Anthem Blue Cross announced a 39% rate hike for its individual market subscribers in California. Despite the fact that the President’s health care plan will only drive health insurance rates higher, the White House seized on this story to revive the government takeover of the health insurance industry. Two months later when the President’s financial regulation plan was stalled in the Senate, the Securities and Exchange Commission charged Goldman Sachs with fraud in marketing some of its subprime mortgage investment products. Again, the White House pounced on this news to get its preferred legislation through Congress.

Now that the Deepwater Horizon oil spill has turned into an environmental disaster, the White House is again trying to turn public anger at one corporation into massive government intervention of an entire sector of the economy. In an email to his leftist Organizing for America activists, President Barack Obama previewed his Oval Office address tonight calling on Congress “to move forward on legislation to promote a new economy powered by green jobs, combat climate change, and end our dependence on foreign oil.” Separately, Joel Benenson, a pollster for the Democratic National Committee and Obama’s presidential campaign, circulated a memo on Capitol Hill arguing that a comprehensive energy bill “could give Democrats a potent weapon to wield against Republicans in the fall.” Politico reports that Benenson’s recommended “messaging architecture” includes the slogan “Making BP Pay Isn’t Enough” and adds: “frame the opposition” as “Big Oil and corporate polluters who have blocked energy reform for decades” and “politicians protecting the special interests that fund their campaigns.”

The irony here is that BP has been a special interest pushing for carbon pricing on Capitol Hill for years now. It was a founding member of the U.S. Climate Action Partnership, a corporatist entity that exists to enact “fair climate change.” And of course by “fair” they mean whatever subsidies and mandates they can extract from the federal government to best protect their bottom line. So this February, BP actually pulled out of USCAP because they thought: “We can be more effective if we show up in the discussion as BP.” As The Washington Examiner’s Tim Carney reports: “They made out particularly well in the House’s climate bill, while natural gas producers suffered.”

As far as the strategy in the Senate goes, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel told The New York Times last week that Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) would use elements of the Kerry-Lieberman American Power Act, the Cantwell-Collins carbon pricing plan, and the Bingaman renewable energy standard bill. A Senate aide told Politico: “an energy deal must include some serious effort to price carbon as a way to slow climate change.” The important thing to remember is that none of this is new. As Heritage Foundation Senate Relations Deputy Dan Holler reported the day before the Deepwater Horizon explosion, Reid has been planning a bait-and-switch from the beginning: first bringing up the Kerry-Lieberman cap-and-trade bill, striking it, and then replacing it with the less well known Bingaman renewable energy standards.

The Heritage Foundation’s Center for Data Analysis has crunched the numbers and found that an RES would: 1) Raise electricity prices by 36 percent for households and 60 percent for industry; 2) Cut national income (GDP) by $5.2 trillion between 2012 and 2035; 3) Cut national income by $2,400 per year for a family of four; 4) Reduce employment by more than 1,000,000 jobs; and 5) Add more than $10,000 to a family of four’s share of the national debt by 2035.

In The Godfather, at Vito Corleone’s funeral, the family consiglieri Tom Hagan leans into the new Don Michael Corleone and whispers: “Do you know how they’re gonna come at’cha?” If the American public wants to avoid a self-inflicted economic disaster on top of the existing environmental one, they need to know how President Obama is going to come after them. Now you know.

Maybe Obama is going to make us an offer we can't refuse...

  2. Obama wants to charge us TONS of money and hopes something will turn our economy into a "green" economy. But this is just the latest excuse. He wants to tax us at European levels because he believes in European socialism.

  3. Thanks for sharing an interesting and informative post...

    My immediate response after reading your heading "What's Behind Obama's Oil Spill Speech" was, hot-air(lol)

  4. Hi Bunni:
    Well this is just another thing on Obama's agenda that he has to get through before it's too late.

  5. Hi Opie:
    Very true. Globalization depends on the environmental policies of the nations and it's through things like Cap & Tax that "spreading the wealth around" and "reparations" will be made throughout the world.

  6. Al,

    That's a good one. Obama is full of "hot air" and every time he speaks his carbon footprint just gets bigger.
    Thanks for stopping by and come again.

  7. It is becoming clearer by the day that Obama has let this disaster get worse in order to further his Green Economy agenda. He has allowed it to become his economic 9/11 and is now using it to fundamentally change domestic policy as Mr. Bush did with foreign policy.

    In the e-mail he sent, Obama mentions "repurposing closed factories to manufacture wind turbines". Granted this might provide thousands of Government jobs but the result will be to turn vast swathes of America into useless windfarms that don't work when it isn't windy and need matching conventional turbines for when it isn't.

    Denmark is the windiest country in Europe and took the lead in winfarmery but has now given up on it because it does not work. It is closing down wind turbine plants, except where it can supply to places like Britain that have yet to see the light.

  8. Hi banned:
    I couldn't agree with you more.
    Obama thinks he can do everything better than everyone else, for example, he'll run a better communist country than anybody else and this time it will work.
    It's perfectly clear that Obama is taking advantage of this "crisis" and not letting it go to waste. And the worse it gets, the better for his energy tax agenda (and globalization). Damn history or proof otherwise...he and his handlers know best.

  9. Nothing I can say antiquity reflects my frustration. We knew they would find a way to push this.

  10. Trestin:
    Let's wait and see what happens in the Senate. I heard a report last night that Harry Reid doesn't have the votes for it. Of course, with enough arm twisting (a la ObamaCare), that could always change.

  16. Another typical 0bama speech that was a total a waste of my time and of airtime.
    I watched it until he got into his REAL agenda, , using another disaster to push his Cap and Trade BS
    But to the average Liberal Leftist Idiots who voted for him, he was "wonderful".
    For 58 days now, the (real) American People have watched in horror as a ocean of black oil has been pouring out of A-hole under our ocean and all we hear is threats and more threats!.

    But no, he wants to “Kick Ass” as his new adviser Spike Lee told him to do. Talk “Street Talk” as Spike Lee suggested. I guess that he intends to make this Disaster go away as he made terrorism go away.
    After about 5-8 minutes, I switched channels and watched a GOOD ballgame and the Yankees beat the Phillies and Roy Halladay.
    And George Bush had nothing to do with the way Halladay pitched or why the Phillies lost.

  21. This has been permitted to go on this long to increase the justification for the legislation, which has been languishing for some time now. I don't know if it will work. It seems that the public has it in for Obama just as much as they do for BP, at least I hope.

  22. Yes, Rhambo came to me in a dream to ask my blessing but I fired back that it would be a blessing for the American people when BO couldn't plug my damn hole.

    I guess I'm a prophet (naturally, without profit).

  23. Matt:
    The people don't want an energy tax, but they didn't want ObamaCare either. I just hope this time there isn't enough votes in the Senate to pass Cap & Tax. Remember, they already passed Cap & Tax in the House.

  24. Mr. Oil Spill:
    Having Rhambo show up in your dream is like having a nightmare.
    As for the profit...maybe Obama will slip you some of that $20 Billion he just got from BP as an incentive to plug yourself up.
